Join volunteers at Fort Tuthill County Park for trail work

Coconino County Parks and Recreation is hosting National Trails Day, where volunteers will help expand the Fort Tuthill Trail System. Volunteer work begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes with lunch at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2 at Fort Tuthill County Park.

Partnering organizations include Flagstaff Biking Organization, the U.S. Forest Service, Coconino Trail Riders, NATRA, Coconino Horsemen’s Alliance, American Conservation Experience and Arizona Conservation Corps. The event is sponsored by Absolute Bikes, Fratelli Pizza, Nackard Pepsi and Kickstand Café.

National Trails Day is a nationwide event that connects a day of service with volunteering on a trail. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System act, which established national trails in 1968, and the 25th anniversary of National Trails Day, which was launched by the American Hiking Society in 1993.

Coconino County Parks and Recreation was recently awarded a federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant, administered by the Arizona State Parks Board, for this trail project, which includes renovating, maintaining, mitigating and restoring the Soldiers Trail, as well as adding approximately ¾-mile of new trail. National Trails Day volunteers will be working to complete a section of the Flagstaff Loop Trail that connects the Soldiers Trail.

Coffee will be served for volunteers between 8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at Fort Tuthill County Park. Snacks, beverages and lunch will also be provided. Volunteers must wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, sunscreen, water and head protection. Hardhats, gloves, tools and trail work instructions will be provided. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

For additional information or questions, please contact Coconino County Parks and Recreation at 928-679-8000.
