Fort Tuthill County Park/State Road 89A Realignment
About the project
SR89A 4 -reduced.jpg

In an effort to promote safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists at Fort Tuthill County Park, Coconino County and the Arizona Department of Transportation are coordinating plans to realign State Route 89A at the entrance to the County’s premier park.

As part of the project, ADOT will construct two roundabouts and relocate the intersection farther into the park, which attracts about 100,000 visitors per year for the annual County Fair, concerts, camping and other events year round. The project is designed to increase safety for all park visitors and those travelling to/from Flagstaff on SR 89A.

For more than five years, the ADOT has worked on plans to better align JW Powell Boulevard, which crosses over Interstate 17 and intersects SR 89A outside Fort Tuthill County Park. The current design of the intersection has not changed since the 1950s and has been the location for many serious vehicle collisions.

Over decades, Fort Tuthill has become a signature destination for outdoor enthusiasts, thousands of county residents and Northern Arizona visitors for concerts and events. Such events have contributed to traffic backups on SR 89A and I-17, which pose safety issues for motorists and pedestrians.

Once the project is complete in 2014, visitors will be greeted with two redesigned and safe entrances that are designed to enhance the experience of all that enter Fort Tuthill County Park.
