Jail Lobby Renovation Will Enhance Safety and Security and Provide for Improved Public Services

We are pleased to announce that we are beginning renovation of our lobby at the Coconino County Detention Center in Flagstaff.  Highlights of the renovation include a redesign of the video visitation area providing large booths and a level of privacy for family members, an enclosed jail lobby service window to enhance safety and security for lobby staff, additional volunteer locker space, and a combined bond facilities and lobby desk to improve communication and work flow. 

Search and Rescue Busy with Community Outreach and Education
Hug a Tree and Survive

Our Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit has been actively reaching out young students gearing up for time at Camp Colton by providing Hug a Tree training.

On September 10, the SAR Unit will be conducting Preventative SAR outreach at the Buffalo Park Trailhead.

On September 11, our Mounted SAR will have a demonstration at the Trappings of the American West exhibition.

Presentation at AZ Homicide Investigator’s Training Focused on Crime Scene Processing
Deputy Harris Homicide Suspect Search

Tom Ross our Crime Scene Investigator / Evidence Technician taught a module for the AZ Homicide Investigator’s Association (AHIA) training recently held in Flagstaff.  Tom’s presentation focused on proper methods for documenting and recording a crime scene processing.  He used a debriefing of the investigation of the homicide of Kane County Deputy Brian Harris to illustrate challenges of rural crime scenes.  “Successful death investigations not only require a vast amount of resources and expertise, success is also dependent upon inter-agency cooperation and partnership,” AHIA founded 1981.

Advanced Officer Training Provides Deputies Continuing Education & Development
CCSO Advanced Officer Training

The Sheriff’s Office Advanced Officer Training provides a wide range of training including defensive tactics, legal updates, driving skills, firearms proficiency, mental health first aid, search and rescue, investigative techniques, and much more.  Deputies are required to complete annual training outlined by the AZ Peace Officer Standards and Training.  The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office expands on the basic requirements as well as addresses current issues and trends in law enforcement.  

Public Situational Awareness / Active Shooter Classes Continue Reaching the Community

Chief Deputy Jim Driscoll and Lieutenant Jim Coffey continue to provide classes to help the public develop a mind-set of awareness and planning.  The most recent class was held for nearly 50 people in the Sherwood Forest Estates, Mountain Rose Ranches, and Kaibab Estates West communities on August 20.  There was excellent audience participation and the community greatly appreciated the expertise and experiences that Driscoll and Coffey shared.  During the month of September, classes also have been scheduled for National Park Service employees and Northern Arizona Non-Profits staff.  

Moenkopi CERT Class – Emergency Preparedness & Response Training for our Community Partners

Thanks to our CERT instructors for another great CERT class held August 23 -25.  Nearly 30 people from the community of Moenkopi completed the three day class. CERT has been really well received in the Moenkopi community, and this is the second team that has been trained in their community.
