Coconino County Parks and Recreation Automates Services

Coconino County will “go live” with a new recreation management system in 2012.  This new system will allow users to register for recreation programs on-line 24/7 through the County Parks and Recreation website.  Campsites at Fort Tuthill County Park will also be available for on-line reservations for the summer season which operates from May 1 through September 30.

Picnic ramadas, traditionally available to be reserved on January 1 will be delayed until March 1 due to the implementation of this new, automated system.  Customers will not be able to reserve ramadas on line, but will be able to view the amenities available throughout the County Park system.  Ramada reservations will be taken Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM beginning March 1, 2012 by calling the Coconino County Parks and Recreation Department at (928) 679-8000 or in person at Fort Tuthill County Park, 2446 Fort Tuthill Loop.

Ramada and campground reservations  will be taken beginning March 1 due to the implementation of a new automated recreation management system.

Cataract Lake County Park Master Plan

The proposed Cataract Lake County Park  Master Plan was approved by the City of Williams Council last December 8.  The Coconino County Board of Supervisors  (BOS) heard a presentation and gave their input regarding the plan at a public meeting last December 6.  The plan is scheduled for BOS approval in January 2012.  After that time, construction documents will be put together in preparation for construction to  commence in Spring 2012.

Cataract Lake County Park in Williams is intended to be redeveloped as a neighborhood park with emphasis on its natural resources and lake features.    Coconino County, in partnership with the City of Williams and agency partners from the US Forest Service, identified key development opportunities and a preliminary design.

Both the City of Williams Parks & Recreation Commission  and the Coconino County Parks & Recreation Commission adopted the plan and recommended its approval by the City of Williams Council and the Coconino County Board of Superrvisors respectively.

Rogers Lake County Natural Area wins State Natural Resources Award

Coconino County Parks and Recreation was awarded the 2011 Natural Resources Award by the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association for the Rogers Lake County Natural Area. Coconino County Parks and Recreation Director Judy Weiss received the award on behalf of the County at the annual State Conference in Tucson August 30-September 1, 2011.

The Arizona Parks and Recreation Association is a non-profit, statewide professional organization that operates for the promotion, broadening and improvement of parks and recreation in Arizona; and offers services which help members become the best parks and recreation service providers.

Coconino County succeeded in acquiring 2250 acres, including 1,400 acres of wetland, of state trust lands for the Rogers Lake County Natural Area.  Rogers Lake, located 10-miles southwest of Flagstaff, is a regionally significant high-elevation wetland important to numerous wildlife species, including elk, black bear, bald eagles and migrating waterfowl.

This $12M acquisition was made possible by the 2002 voter approved Coconino Parks and Open Space sales tax and a 50% match from the Arizona Growing Smarter State Trust Acquisition Grant awarded by the Arizona State Parks Board in 2010.
