P3NAZ: People Solving Problems and Exploring Phenomena in Northern Arizona

Description

The People Solving Problems and Exploring Phenomena in Northern Arizona professional development course was developed by Coconino County Education Service Agency and Northern Arizona faculty in Biochemistry for K-8 teachers. The overarching purpose of this project is to increase K-8 teachers' level of understanding of life and physical science concepts through problem-based learning and build capacity in Northern Arizona to support continued efforts in science education.

Learning Outcomes

Participants in the course will:

  • Learn life science concepts related to human interactions with natural hazards and the environment through problem-based and phenomena-driven experiences including emergency management scenarios, data visualizations, and an engineering design challenge;
  • Gain competence and confidence in teaching integrated STEM and help your students develop pathways of conceptual understanding of human interactions with the environment, including use of food, energy, and water;
  • Learn ways to support STEM learning through problem-based learning which provides a structure for discovery that helps students internalize learning and leads to greater comprehension; and
  • Gain skills in obtaining, interpreting, and communicating data as strategies for driving instructional design and student work in STEM.
