Compost System

What is Compost?

Compost is decomposed vegetable scraps, leaves, and other plant material. Making your own compost and mixing it into your garden is the best way to improve the soil's texture, fertility, and capacity to hold water. Composting also keeps food waste out of landfills, where it releases methane—a potent greenhouse gas—as it decomposes.

The City of Flagstaff website offers lots of information about compost and its benefits. Click on Compost Recipe to learn how to make your own compost!

Who Built the Compost Station?

In 2020, Eagle Scout candidate Mason Takeuchi led his team in preparing the site, then building and installing a three-bin compost system. Mason and his family maintain it throughout the year, supplying it with fruit and vegetable scraps from their weekly volunteer work at the Flagstaff Family Food Center.
