Timberline Firearms & Training
-
Timberline Firearms and Training was built in 2017 by JKC Construction. Rob Wilson, the owner wanted a shooting range that was a state of the art facility but also sustainably built. Rob worked to ensure the building fit in with the character of the neighborhood and decided to go with a barn style roof to pay homage to the barn that existed on the site previously. He was the project manager during construction and worked hard to reduce construction waste. He purposely put the parking lot on the south side of the building, that way, he would not need to use ice melt chemicals during the winter months.
-
An automated smart system was installed for the building's light and heat that can be controlled remotely.
-
The building was made to be extremely durable with a building envelope that was constructed with 8-inch cast in place Concrete walls, Hardie plank exterior, concrete flooring, and steel shutters on the windows.
-
The owner also installed a heat pump for heating and cooling needs for other parts of the building. Heat pumps qualify for an energy efficiency rebate from the City of Flagstaff for those projects within City limits. Click here for more information.
-
The business recycles all cardboard and even the bullets from the shooting range.
-
Timberline offers free storage for patrons to have a dedicated space for their firearms
-
Rob went to great lengths when the building was constructed to prevent erosion and topsoil preservation. He even relocated 50 prairie dogs to the Petrified Forest.
-
12 inches of spray foam were added in the lid and 5.5 inches in the walls. The building has extensive ventilation including two sets of large HEPA filters systems as well as an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator). Fans are located in the attic and are rated at less than one sone when running. The owner completed acoustic testing for the shooting range.
-
Timberline has recirculating hot water that is efficiently heated using the boiler. The water heater is in the equipment room, which is adjacent to the restrooms, an efficient design.
-
The facility offers multiple classes on safe and responsible firearms ownership: Four Fundamentals of Safety of Firearms, Hunter Safety, Stop the Bleed, and Safe Storage. They also allow other organizations to use their classroom.
-
Local and regional materials were used in construction including malpai stone on the exterior and windows from MI Windows in Prescott. The owner even used reclaimed wood for the picture frames inside and reclaimed corrugated roofing for their dumpster enclosure.
-
The building has various zones for heating and cooling. For example, the shooting range has the AC blowing directly on people, that way the rest of the building does not need to maintain the same cooling level.
-
The owner planted native plants and xeriscaping, which will require little water. When they do need to water, they will irrigate with the collected rainwater in their cistern.
-
The exterior lighting complies with Dark Skies, one zone level higher than where they are located.
-
Prometheus solar installed their 48-kW solar array that supplies twice the power that is needed.
-
The owner installed two EV chargers and worked with APS to make sure the power to charge them comes directly from the PV. The charging stations are not just for patrons but for anyone who needs a charge.
