The Coconino County Adult Probation Department facilitates a domestic violence impact panel. The purpose of the panel is to confront domestic violence offenders by allowing domestic violence survivors to express to the offender the impact of the crime on them and their family.
Members of the panel include local attorneys, judges, police officers, counselors, probation officers and domestic violence survivors. There is a fee to attend of $20 which is used to cover the costs associated with the panel, including travel costs for panel volunteers coming from out of town.
Domestic violence can leave lifelong emotional scars on the individual, the relationship and the family. Many domestic violence offenders were victims themselves and, by learning about that victimization and confronting it, they begin to understand the importance of their role in breaking the cycle of violence. Feedback from program participants has been very positive.
