Coconino County Sheriffs Office Memorial Day Holiday 2021 Statistics

The extended weekend encompassing May 28th through the 31st, 2021 resulted in a significant number of calls stemming from outdoor activity in Northern Arizona. Sheriff Deputies worked closely with US Forest Service, National Park Service, Arizona Game and Fish, and other Northern Arizona public safety personnel to address the increased outdoor activity. Community and forest area patrols included increased safety and enforcement measures related to off highway vehicle traffic, boating, and fire restriction violations. 

For the period of May 28th - 31st, 2021 deputies responded to1,378 total calls for service, including both citizen initiated and officer-initiated activities. Deputies responded to 756 total calls for service during the previous weekend of May 21st – 23rd, 2021.  The below chart shows a comparison of some of the more common types of calls during the holiday and non-holiday time frames.

Traffic / Moving Vehicle Stops:   Deputies throughout the county conducted 185 traffic stops during the holiday weekend, resulting in 8 arrests, 54 moving vehicle violation citations, and 27 other traffic citations. 


Off Road Vehicle (OHV) Activity: Deputies made 144 contacts with OHVs which resulted in 25 citations. Two of these contacts were injury accidents.  


Safety/Informational Station:   The Coconino County Sheriff’s Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) and CCSO Patrol Volunteers provided OHV related safety education and information in the Cinder Hills off road recreation area. 


Campfire Activity:  Deputies received 64 illegal campfire calls which results in 21 illegal campfire citations. Many of the calls were legal propane fires. 


DUI: Deputies contacted 27 designated drivers, made a total of 3 DUI arrests, 1 misdemeanor, 1 extreme and one DUI Drug arrest.


Page Boat Patrol:  Deputies at Lake Powell contacted 69 vessels to address boat safety issues. During the contacts with boaters, deputies not only checked for impaired driving but also checked to make sure the right safety equipment was onboard and accessible. There was 1 boat accident and 11 boat citations given. 


Detention Facility:  The Coconino County Detention Facility Flagstaff Facility receives arrested persons from Coconino Sheriff’s Office, Flagstaff Police Department, Northern Arizona University Police, Williams Police, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and state and federal agencies in the area such as the National Park Service, US Forest Service, and Arizona Game and Fish.


During the period of May 28th – 31st, 2021, a total of 84 persons were booked (13 of these were at the Page Facility). Of the total bookings, 45 were booked on felony charges.
