Suspect Arrested in Kaibab Estates West After Standoff
Coconino County, AZ – On June 5, 2023 at approximately 8:04 PM CCSO received a 911 hangup from the area of Quarry Road in Kaibab Estates West north of Ash Fork, AZ. Upon arrival, Deputies discovered that there were two people being held at that residence against their will. There was a male suspect on scene who was being uncooperative and refusing to let the victims speak with the Deputy. This subject was extremely agitated and volatile throughout the contact. Once additional Deputies from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office as well as Troopers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety arrived on scene to assist, the Deputy was able to get the two victims away from the residence to safety. After refusing to be taken into custody by the deputies on scene, the suspect fled back into the residence. There was credible information that the suspect had access to firearms inside the house. Due to the fact there were no other people in the house and in the interest of de-escalating the situation that evening, deputies fell back to an area away from the house.
Due to the circumstances on scene and no other people being in imminent danger, it was determined that contact would be made the next morning to continue the investigation. Through the investigation and interviews, it was determined the suspect in this case had several felony charges pending from the activities that occurred over the previous couple of weeks. The next morning, June 6, 2023 CCSO Detectives obtained a search warrant for the residence on Quarry Road. Due to the behavior of the male suspect on scene the night before, CCSO responded with the Northern Arizona Regional Tactical Team as well as negotiators, to carry out the search warrant. Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
Upon arrival Officers attempted to contact the male suspect in the residence via telephone, but the attempts were unsuccessful. Officers on scene could see the suspect inside the house, but despite multiple commands and other measures, he refused to comply. The tactical team utilized several less lethal options to include OC Gas, K9 Deployment, Taser, and less lethal projectiles to attempt to take the suspect into custody without further incident. After approximately 4 and a half hours, the suspect was finally taken into custody. One operable firearm was located in the residence. The suspect sustained minor injuries during the encounter and was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment. No officers or deputies were injured in the encounter. The suspect was released after several hours and was later booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility.
Nicholas Barone, a 35-year-old Ash Fork man, was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility for 2 counts Unlawful Imprisonment, 2 counts Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon, Resisting Arrest, and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
CCSO would like to thank the Flagstaff Police Department, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, and the AZ Department of Public Safety for their assistance in bringing this situation to as peaceful of a conclusion as possible.
