At their regular meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 24, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors (Board) will conduct their first discussion regarding a procedure for filling the upcoming vacancy in District 3.
The seat will be vacated by the retiring Supervisor Matt Ryan on Dec. 31 of this year. Per A.R.S. 16-230, the Board shall appoint someone to fill the vacancy through the remainder of Ryan’s term which ends Dec. 31, 2024.
Arizona Revised Statutes also provide some requirements for applicants to be considered, including, but not limited to:
- Applicant must be a registered voter with the incumbent political party, in this case the Democratic Party.
- Applicant must reside at a physical address within the current District 3 boundaries. Redistricting due to the 2020 Census does not take effect until Jan. 1, 2025.
Beyond those, the Board does have some discretion in how they accept and review applications, and the timeline for appointment, which will be discussed in detail at Tuesday’s meeting. The full meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., however this discussion item has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to encourage public participation.
